Vietnam is the biggest Robusta producer in the world!

Updated: Apr 26, 2024

but yet, sustainable farming is still a big concern. Organic is the key to not only strengthening the quality of our beloved coffee but also giving a helping hand to our environment, people, and land. Join us on this exciting yet challenging journey!

Introduced to Vietnam in the mid-nineteenth century, coffee has become one of the country’s main industrial crops. Vietnam is now the world’s largest producer of Robusta and the second-largest coffee exporter. But this wasn't a story of happenstance; it was a tale of perseverance, innovation, and the indomitable spirit of the Vietnamese people.

Decades of intense fertilizer use and monoculture — the cultivation of a single crop to maximize its production — have degraded the growing conditions of most of the farming lands in the central highlands - the “coffee capitals” of Vietnam.

However, the situation has changed in the last few years. Farmers have been encouraged to restore old, exhausted coffee farms to a more natural state, engage in intercropping, apply organic cultivation techniques, and only pick ripe cherries. Farming this way brings tastier robusta and more importantly, healthier farming places.

Currently, Vietnam grows three varieties, Robusta, Arabica, and Liberia. The proportions of Robusta and Arabica plantations are 90% and about 10%, while the growing area of Liberia contributes a very small part. Vietnam is responsible for more than half of the global Robusta supply. In the 2020-2021 crop season, the country reached an output of 1.68 million tons of Robusta coffee on an area of 630,000 hectares, according to the United States Department of Agriculture database.

In 2022, Vietnam shipped about 1.72 million tons of coffee overseas for 4 billion USD in value. Vietnamese coffee is now present in more than 80 countries and territories worldwide.

Particularly, the quality of Vietnamese Robusta coffee is being widely recognized by leading coffee-consuming powers. Vietnam’s coffee export has recorded strong growth in such world coffee powerhouses as Germany, France, and Canada, while Italy – a ‘connoisseur’ of fine coffee with the highest demand for quality – has recently raised its import of Vietnamese products.
